Jino, Mechanics of Time, 2014
About the Artist and the Artwork
Harutyun Jinanyan (Jino) was born in Yerevan in 1957. He graduated from the Yerevan Institute of Fine Arts and Theater, took part in theatrical and TV performances, and acted in the movie "Arevik" (1978). In 1980 he moved to Moscow and entered the Faculty of Stage Directing at the State Institute of Theater Arts (GITIS); there he studied in Pyotr Fomenkko’s class and at the end of the 1980s he was already a director in the Mossovet Theater. He stood at the beginnings of the ATV (Author’s Television), and directed many projects within its framework. From 1998-2003 he was the main director of the program “Good Morning” at ORT (Public Russian TV) and other programs. After quitting TV in 2003 he left for New York and completely devoted himself to painting.

References to time in its wide understanding are the characteristic feature of Jino’s works. Here is how the author describes his own philosophy: "We live in space and in time. Our world is three-dimensional but there is also a fourth dimension. Time exists both beyond us and within us. It is mirrored. "Internal" time is the fourth measure. This time is like a spring in the clock. It is the time released to us by the Creator. The time within us is the true reality. Hours, days, years in love and in creation fly by like an instant".

In Jino’s abstractions, one can trace the influence of Joan Miro’s surrealistic works, and the intensive use of color refers to Henri Matisse’s fauvist works. The influence of European modernists can be traced not only in Jino’s painting but also in his early works on TV, for instance, in the decoration of the program "Vmeste" (Together) on ATV one can see intentionally simplified forms, vigorous colors, unexpected color combinations especially characteristic of Matisse.

"Mechanics of Time" presented at the auction is done by means of continuous lines put on one another. The painting continues the theme of "internal time" and offers to see it in the stream – flows, interlacements, and point events that a person lives every day. Light and dark, bright and muted – every person has their own "internal time", whose duration and quality correlates with what one fills his/her life with. This idea has been repeatedly reflected in the works of great writers whether it be A.S.Griboyedov’s comedy "Woe From Wit" – "Happy people do not watch hours"; F.Cooper’s novel "The Pathfinder, or The Inland Sea" – "Happy count time by minutes, and the miserable count it by months"; Marshak’s poem – "We know, time is a loose concept. It depends on what kind of content you put into it"; Agatha Christie – "Time is such a vague thing. One seems very long. To the other - the opposite"; and Shakespeare wrote: "Time travels at different speeds for different people".

At the beginning of his creative career Harutyun Jinanyan adopted the pseudonym Jino and by that name started participating in group exhibitions and organizing personal exhibitions in Yerevan, Moscow, and New York. His works are kept at the Museum of Modern Art in Yerevan, in galleries, and in private collections in France, the USA, Israel, Russia, and Armenia. The American professional gallery journal "A Hundred Eleven" named Jino one of the ten most interesting and unusual young painters in the world.
