About the Artist and the Artwork
Ruben Oganesyan was born in 1995 in Moscow. Graduated from the Art School and Faculty of Arts of The Russian State University of Cinematography (VGIK).

In his art, Ruben often depicts Armenian landscapes both in graphics and in painting. Each of his works is brutal and tender at the same time and emphasizes the artist's reverent attitude to his native nature and culture. Ruben's paintings are very honest, lively, and real, without embellishment and excessive drama, fixing real stories and objects.

The presented work depicts Dadivank, one of the oldest Armenian monasteries, located in the Karvachar region of Artsakh. The first mentions date back to the 9th century and for centuries the monastery served as the residence of bishops, a princely tomb, and a place of popular pilgrimage. According to legend, it was founded on the site where one of the disciples of the Apostle Thaddeus, Dadi, died a martyr's death in the 1st century, whose relics were found under a stela near the altar during excavations in 2007.

Since November 2020, the territories where the monastery complex is located have come under the control of Azerbaijan.
