About the Artist and the Artwork
Alexander Mkrtchyan was born in Yerevan in 1962 to a family of architects. Alexander graduated from the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute and worked first as an engineer and then engaged in the design, sculpture, and production of interior items. Alexander was first interested in painting at the age of 15, then there was a long break and he returned to painting again after he was 50. For several years the artist created more than a hundred pictures painted in mixed media – acrylics and relief paste forming recognizable handwriting. Alexander’s works are distinguished by their three-dimensional volume and carry away into history warming with memories.

The main character of the artist’s works is the city of Yerevan itself. The streets, buildings, yards, and cozy squares – dear, beloved and so familiar to its inhabitants – continue to live a rich life in Alexander’s paintings. The artist does not separate architecture from nature; in his works, one cannot find isolated and indifferent architecture but there is always an element of a garden. Most often shrubs and trees are inscribed into the urban landscape. The peculiarity of the artist is that he paints trees without leaves so that the building can be seen through the trunk and branches. Therefore, there are only three seasons in Alexander Mkrtchyan’s paintings – spring when the buds have not blossomed yet, fall when the leaves have already fallen, and winter when the tree is completely naked.

The process of creating a painting for the artist starts with a promenade around the city; he walks, looks for picturesque places, takes pictures, chooses the most successful shot, and proceeds directly to the creative process, recalling the feelings of the city from childhood. This is how the work "Silence", presented at the auction, was created. The city’s main building, the Government House on Republic Square, rises through the naked crown of trees – majestic and dearly cozy at the same time. The golden hues of fall and the soft colors of the lilac twilight of this lyrical landscape echo the warmth with which one recalls the sunset in the heart of the city.

Alexander took part in a number of group exhibitions in Yerevan, Los Angeles, and Tbilisi and also held 4 personal exhibitions in Yerevan. The artist’s works are kept in private collections in France, Russia, Belgium, Luxembourg, Canada, and the USA.
