Hayduk Smbatyan, Untitled, 2019
About the Artist and the Artwork
Hayduk Smbatyan was born in 1990 in Ejmiadzin. Studied at Yerevan State College of Fine Arts named after Panos Terlemezian and at Yerevan State Academy of Fine Arts, Department of Painting. Member of Artists’ Union of Armenia. Participated in many group exhibitions in Armenia and abroad, also had several personal exhibitions.

"The overall impression of Hayduk Smbatyan’s exhibited works is unequivocal in that the canvases emphasize the existence of the material, the surface is matte, which keeps the eye away from optical illusions and distraction from the existence of the work itself.
The fact of the presence of material and paint is so important that it seems to be about the relationship between the body and the skin.
Therefore, even these works, which speak of an excessive artist, first of all fixate the eye on the level of texture, style,
material, after which they get a kind of pulsating effect. Abstract lyrical is transformed into abstract collage, expressionist sculptural approach is transformed into realism with photo and drawing effects, primitive forms are combined with signs of traditional and modern life, fairy-tale is turned into knight-style and so on.
The more matter (not shining) the plain surface is, the more profound it is, because each canvas carries many layers on it, therefore intersections of many histories and experiences. The subject of the artist under question is not the thing itself, the object, but being or essence as the field of existence of matter and its many transformations, be it a woman, music, knight or scarecrow. That certain pantheism, that is, that desire to find breath in all phenomena is present in all the works of the artist."
