AUCTION ENDED
Ekaterina Rozhkova SOLD, Dress, 2015
About the Artist and the Artwork
Ekaterina Rozhkova was born in Moscow in 1969. After studying in the Artistic School for Gifted Children in Fine Arts under the Surikov Institute and graduating from the VGIK (All-Union Institute for Cinematography) , Ekaterina did her internship in National Academy of Fine Arts in Tokyo, Japan from 1992 to 1994.

In Ekaterina’s works a man as such is absent, she prefers to study the world of simple objects and architectural forms that surround us in everyday life. The objects depicted with detective meticulousness may tell a lot about the habits and destiny of their owners without requiring their presence. Plates, mechanisms, tents, pigeon houses, and of course pieces of clothing have served as a source of inspiration for Rozhkova in different periods.

Christening dresses make up a special, very intimate cycle of artworks by Rozhkova, who is a mother of two daughters. So in the presented work "Dress", the disembodied lightness of thin cambric seems to keep the warmth of the child's body, and the "soaring" effect, even more, animates the object, which has fulfilled its purpose long ago. This large-scale graphic work is permeated with universal love, and the laboriously studied object transforms into a symbol of transient childhood. Ekaterina has repeatedly worked on this subject in different techniques, and the work presented at the auction is certainly a recognizable sample of her creative work and one of the most significant lots of the current auction.

Ekaterina Rozhkova has participated in numerous fairs and biennales of modern art, she had more than a dozen personal exhibitions starting from 1995. Her works are in the collections of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, the Novosibirsk State Art Museum, the Surgut Art Museum as well as in private collections in Russia, Estonia, Japan, Switzerland, Spain, Germany, France, Israel, the UK, and the USA.
